🏜️ Day 16 Desert Hike – Finding Home in the Tiny Desert House
🏜️ It’s been only eight weeks, and already this tiny house in the desert is as much home to me as anywhere I’ve ever lived. Be it for a month, a decade, or a year, it’s all the same once I find my footing. New habits, new landmarks, new faces, and names-these quickly fill my life as the old habits, landmarks, and names of my last life fade. It’s a way of both becoming and being. Yumiko is like this too. Old places don’t suit us for long; we always long for someplace new. That’s one of the things that binds us as a couple, our restless sense of curiosity for the life unlived. I wonder if Japan can hold us? It’s not in our nature, after all, to settle or to ever put down roots. There’s Euro...

☀️ The Good Life - 08/26/2024 (109) - I got rid of my vlogging gear
Просмотров 7918 часов назад
Day 108 - Yesterday, I gave away all my personal workstation vlogging gear: the high-end monitors, Elgato lights, Stream Deck XL, boom-mic, speakers-the whole setup that helped me build my remote work and vlogging home studio over the years. When the young RUclipsr I passed it on to asked why I didn’t ship it to Japan, my answer was simple: I won’t need it. I don’t want it. Just like I don’t wa...

Day 15 Desert Hike - When podcasts align. This weekend brought a rare convergence of my four favorite podcasts: Just Japan, Ishikawa Summit to Sea, Paprika Girl’s Midnight Diner, and The Beanpod. That meant I had the pleasure of quite personable podcast entertainment keeping me company, curious, and entertained from Friday through Sunday. Back in the day, as part of the JVLOG community during t...

Day 109 - It’s fascinating to me how, as I approach a life of freedom, there’s nothing I feel the need to prepare. In the past, whenever I was gearing up for a holiday, there was always a list-new clothes, a hat, a camera, maybe some fresh luggage. But now, with the biggest “holiday” of my life just ahead, I find myself wanting nothing. Well, except for a new iPhone-but only because my old one ...

When I lived at the beach, my days ended with calisthenics at the water’s edge after a refreshing ocean swim. Now, out here in the desert, it’s a different story. I walk miles each day, nearly naked under the scorching sun, through the rugged Anza-Borrego chaparral. Sometimes, when I come across heavy rocks, I lift them in homage to the traditional Japanese art of stone-lifting, “Ishi-sashi” (石...

Day 110 - In one week, Yumiko will get the keys to our new place. The following day, all our new appliances will arrive, and then Yumiko’s full-time profession will be homemaking-along with anything else she chooses to pursue. Starting over from scratch at sixty feels more freeing than it did at twenty; the noise of a post-adolescent mind is long gone, and the worries about an uncertain future ...

With just thirty-three days remaining before Ollie the dog flies to Japan (yes, another countdown), I’m assembling and installing his flight crate in the Prius to help him get familiar with it as a fixture of the car-something he’ll see and maybe even ride in during our daily drives to Julian for our evening dog walks. It’s interesting how counting down to important life events heightens the experience and fills me with delicious anticipation. 🏜️ “Just let it go," my wife said. It was in a text message from Yumiko this afternoon. I had been venting to her about how nothing at work feels challenging or productive since my last big project ended in June. Just FYI Kurt...even the U.S. Marine Corps has gotten rid of sit ups and replaced them with abdominal crunches. This was done because traditional sit ups mainly work the hip flexors, the abs are secondary, and they cause unneeded strain/stress on the lower back. Just a suggestion I thought I would pass along in the interest of trying to keep your lower back healthy.

Smart idea. I am crate training a young dog myself. What I do is I decrease the dogs visibility outside the crate and increase our distance slowly over the course of weeks. That way, he has lots of time to adjust to being far away from me in a crate and not being able to see outside of the crate.

I did think about mentoring, but I’ve already created the organization’s project management methodology, including a full video course, templates, a library, and a training series that has helped train over 100 project managers in our organization. A simple life like that sure sounds good. I just had a child, and am experiencing sleep problems like you used to, and this comment is definitely something to meditate on. Not regrets of course, but just thinking what would life be like otherwise, and how to best cope with giving a good life to the family and myself! In my situation, my way seems very perfectionist and all-or-nothing, so I wonder if I just spent a life of the mind, my brain would find a way to muck it up anyway 😅Thought provoking nonetheless. Glad the fitness is going well.

Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comment. It's interesting to hear your perspective from that early stage of raising children. I must admit, I didn’t give much thought to these things back then; those thoughts only came later. I simply struggled at the time. Perhaps you'll fare better, having already started to reflect on these matters. Like you, I have my concerns-or maybe doubts is the better word-about the so-called "life of the mind." I know how easily it could lead me into a dark place of selfish introspection. My family certainly helped keep me from that, though that’s not their purpose, of course. It was just a fortunate side effect that I found a sense of selflessness through trying to be a good parent. I wish you all the best in your journey. You've been with me for a long time, and I really appreciate your support. It's always a pleasure to see your comments, and congratulations on your new parenthood. Wishing you the best!

My friend, your solution is simple; let go. If I could sum it up in quotes I would use the following: “The things you own end up owning you.” - Fight Club “When you want more than you have, you think you need. And when you think more than you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.” - Eddie Vedder Let go of the illusion of comfort and train your mind to be still and confident. All these thoughts and the fears and illusions they create keep you in a cage. Being truly “prepared to die” should not include “having your affairs in order.” Respectfully.

Hey Kurt! Just wanted to start by saying thanks for always sharing your thoughts with us. It is always interesting to hear your thoughts and have mine even if I don't comment every time. However, you do have me thinking about my life and my daughter and my time when death comes knocking. I think right now I am not ready for death simply because of some things you mentioned. Raising my daughter and I have so many things that are unfinished. My art, my career, my guidance for others. I think I am not ready at the moment, but I realize there will be a time when I am ready for what's coming. We don't escape it. I have had a wonderful life so far and feel blessed in many ways. P.S. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and for being with me on this long journey. I think you make an excellent point. If I were to revise my creed today, I might clarify that while the objective is to have everything in order, life rarely affords us that luxury. It’s more of a state of progression towards completion rather than a finished state, especially in our younger years. I've only reached this moment due to age and having ticked off so many life goals. So, yes, I completely agree with your insight. Thank you for sharing your thoughts-I truly appreciate them. When Chie and I first went over to Japan in '91, we were not married. I had a working holiday visa, but was able to switch it to a working visa when a school hired me. After a year, Chie and I got married but immigration would only grant me a yearly spousal visa. That meant, I had to have yearly, face to face meetings at immigration, in Fukuoka city. After a few years of that, and the birth of our son, they finally issued me a proper visa.

Kurt - I have been watching your videos from the time when you lived in Japan to your return back to the United States. I also lived in Japan when I was in the U.S. Navy and was able to live and work over there for around 20 years. I always wanted to continue living there, but I had two sons that we wanted to learn more of their homeland (both were born in Japan). We ended up buying a house here and I continued working (after the Navy), until a few months ago when I decided, I'm totally retired. I do like the United States and I'm currently living in Florida (I lived in Michigan before that). Now that my sons are adults, I've told my wife (who is Japanese), that I'd like to go back to Japan if possible. I've spent a some years here, but it's not the same. If I had a chance, I'd like to make the switch to living in Japan again. We are supposed to visit Japan soon, but I know it will be short and many friends are gone (I've been there are few times for a few days before). The question is whether it is possible to return and will we be happy there again. If you like, contact me and we could talk more. I do like the United States (it's the country of my birth), but I also like Japan the same, and perhaps even more. My name is Wade.

I love the rain. My creativity thrives during a rain storm. ❤

I agree. And that’s a great observation about creativity being improved with the rain and weather.

I know it has to be challenging being away from Yumiko. You both are strong and amazing people and it'll be wonderful for you guys to reunited again. ❤️ I'm glad you're taking care of yourself. 😊

My husband and I have been following you for years and we're glad to see you still making vids! Will be glad for you when you get back with your family! Wanted to tell you something we thought was funny, we're here in Ohio and it's was a little after 9pm and while we were sitting on our deck, watching you talk as you sat on your deck, a plane went over head at the EXACT same moment as you mentioned the one there and pointed up and so it made the video experience extra cool and surreal! The plane's even sounded the same! :D Have a great rest of your weekend and cheers to a great week ahead!

Hello to you and your husband! Thank you for your kind message. It’s truly an honor to have both of you sharing this journey with me. Your anecdote about the plane flying overhead between Ohio and California at the same moment made me smile-that's such a great detail! Thank you again for your long-standing support. I really, really appreciate it, and I look forward to sharing even more with you in the future. Please say hi to your husband for me, and have a wonderful day! 😊

The financial person that contacted you out of the blue and wants to do pro bono work is probably similar to tuktuk scams in Bangkok. A tuktuk will approach a tourist that looks like it is their first time in Thailand and offer them a very, very low fare to drive them around to the tourist hotspots. Along the way the tuktuk will make unexpected stops at jewelry shops, tailors and gem shops. Once at these shops, the tourist will be hit with high pressure sales tactics and basically tricked into buying things they had no plans of buying and the tuktuk driver will get a nice kickback from these businesses.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I did meet with the financial advisor and it turns out there was no scam involved. A very straightforward individual. Have a wonderful day!

I think the excitement and fanfare of your retirement may be tied to all the life changes happening in relation to it. New house, new country, hell, in some ways a new life. It all awaits you on the other side of the retirement. The last day of work is the dam that stands between you and real change.

Please stay away from those bees, Kurt. You are in the desert and those bees are probably of the Africanized variety. Those bees will swarm and attack to kill and there is no escape. They are no joke. Seriously.

Do you recycle at home or just dump everything in one bag as garbage?

I do not currently recycle here. However, I will begin recycling again when I get to Japan.

@@softypapa I see So for now you just dump everything in one bag even cans or glass bottles? Do you get nasty juice in the bottom of bags often?
